Agate hunting is the gateway drug of rockhounding. It requires no tools, happens on beaches, and rewards patience with little translucent planets — banded, glowing, older than most mountains. It also generates endless identification debates, because to the untrained eye an agate is just another wet pebble. The trained eye is mostly looking for one thing: light.

What an agate is

Agate is banded chalcedony — quartz built from crystals too small to see, deposited in layers inside a cavity in volcanic rock. Chemically it's the same SiO₂ as the quartz crystals in a geode; structurally it's a different animal — dense, waxy, tough, and often gorgeously striped. When its host basalt finally erodes away, the harder agate survives, tumbling down rivers and along shorelines where hunters find it.

The flashlight test

The definitive field test, and the reason serious hunters carry a small flashlight even at noon.

Press a bright flashlight against the back of the stone (or hold the stone up against the sun — carefully, beside it, not into it):

  • Agate: light penetrates, glowing amber, honey, or milky-blue through thin edges — sometimes lighting the whole stone like a lampshade. Internal bands appear as shadows in the glow.
  • Ordinary rock: dark. Opaque. Nothing.

Translucency is why wet agates seem to switch on: water fills surface scratches and lets light in, which is why the best hunting is the wet gravel line after a storm.

Reading the bands

Banding separates agate from plain chalcedony, and its pattern is the signature:

  • Concentric bands — nested rings following the outline of the original cavity, like contour lines on a map. The classic "fortification agate," so-called because the angular ringed patterns resemble fortress walls from above.
  • Water-level bands — straight, parallel, horizontal layers recording gravity as the cavity filled (these stones tell you which way was up, millions of years ago).
  • Eyes — perfect little concentric circles on the surface.

Bands may be bold stripes of red and white or subtle gray-on-gray shadows visible only in the flashlight glow. A stone can be genuine agate with faint bands — but no banding at all makes it plain chalcedony, still a keeper, just filed differently.

The supporting evidence

Run the standard identification checks:

  • Hardness: ~7. An agate scratches glass and shrugs off a steel knife.
  • Luster: waxy — this is distinctive. Not glassy like crystal quartz, not dull like chert; a broken agate surface has the low sheen of a wax candle.
  • Fracture: conchoidal — smooth curved shells, often with fine concentric ripples like a clamshell.
  • Feel: smooth, dense, cool; agates feel subtly "harder than they look" in the hand.
  • Skin: rough weathered agates wear a pitted, orange-peel textured husk, often with hints of the glow at chipped corners.

Agate vs. the cousins

All these are quartz family; the differences are texture and light:

The flashlight sorts them instantly: agate and chalcedony glow, jasper and chert do not. (Nature, enjoying chaos, does produce jasp-agate — part opaque, part translucent. Both answers are correct.)

Beach glass deserves a mention as the great impostor: tumbled glass is also translucent, but shows no bands, may hold tiny bubbles, and — the quartz rule again — cannot scratch another agate, while a real agate scratches glass with ease.

Where and how to hunt

Agates concentrate wherever water sorts gravel by toughness:

  • Lake Superior shores (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan) — the iron-red Lakers, agate royalty.
  • Oregon and Washington coasts — winter storms restock the gravel beds every year.
  • River gravels in Montana (the famous Yellowstone moss agates), and the Rio Grande's banded beauties in Texas.
  • Anywhere volcanic bedrock meets moving water, worldwide.

Technique is humble: walk slowly, watch the wet line, let the sun backlight the gravel, and pick up anything that glows. Every experienced hunter's pocket ends the day holding nine "maybe" stones per agate — the flashlight test at the car sorts the planets from the pebbles.

And the maybes that fail? Check them for geode potential before tossing — light, round, and lumpy has its own happy ending.
